If you live in an area where severe storms and bad weather are often an issue, especially throughout the winter and during temperature changes, it's time to take some precautions. If you worry that you and your family will be left without light, heat, water, and more, you need to take the time to invest in appliances that will help you and to stock your home with the items that are really needed. Here are some of the items you want to get so you aren't worried this storm season.

Generator

A generator for the home in case you run out of power could help you flush the toilet, give you lights to see throughout the night, or provide heat if needed. You can get a unit that is powered by fuel or one that is powered by a battery or solar energy that is stored during the day. Get a unit large enough that you could run a small heater if needed; it isn't necessary to have one to power the entire home. Contact a company like Northwest Power Services Inc. to learn more.

Water and Filtration Options

Having gallons or bottled water is ideal since you need water to survive, and you may not be able to purify water if you are without power. Be sure that you have bottles stored, and you may even want to get a couple of water bottles that have filtration systems on them. This way, you can purify other water in the event that you run out of your own supply.

Packaged Food

Food that is easy to store and has a long shelf life is ideal, as is food that doesn't have to be cooked. Look into stocking these items:

  • Canned fruits and vegetables
  • Protein or granola bars
  • Canned chips or crackers
  • Protein shakes or vitamin drinks

You want to have foods that are high in protein and that have the carbohydrates necessary to provide you with energy until you have power again.

Checking all the items and supplies you have ready to go every year is best. You want to make sure that the food isn't expired and that you have plenty of flashlights that are charged or have working batteries and are ready to go. If storm season is a current worry and you know that your house isn't as prepared as it should be and that you don't have supplies in your safe place to go, it's time to get prepared.
