Gabion walls are cage-like structures that retain soil, plus add color and texture to a landscape. If you would like to install this type of retaining wall on your property, research the materials that you will need to complete the project.

The Properties Of A Gabion Wall

A gabion wall is a three-dimensional structure. The exterior sides of a gabion wall are commonly constructed of galvanized steel. Some gabion products contain a PVC coating that will increase the durability of a wall.

A wall will contain welded wire mesh panels or double-twisted wire mesh panels. Mesh panels feature a woven pattern. A gabion wall is porous. Rainwater will be filtered through both sides of a wall.

The Materials

  • sod cutter
  • shovel
  • rake
  • mesh fabric
  • scissors
  • gabion cages or baskets
  • wire
  • wire cutters
  • rocks, stones, or tile pieces

The Supplies

Shop for some industrial supplies that will support the preparation of the land and the assembly of the gabion structure. A gabion wall is held in place by the filling materials that are added to it. Cages or baskets that contain thick woven metal sections will retain their shape. A sturdy metal structure is essential for holding heavy rocks or stones.

When shopping for materials, assess the weave pattern of various gabion cages and baskets. The filling materials that are added to a gabion wall will need to be larger in size than the openings within the woven metal.

Most of the materials that you will need to erect a wall can be purchased at a hardware store. The rocks, stones, or tile pieces that you will use to fill a gabion wall can be purchased at a home improvement center or a landscaping store.

The Installation Of The Retaining Wall

Choose a part of your property that is level. The property that you select should not be prone to flooding. Use a sod cutter to remove grass from the property. Use a shovel to scoop up the grass that you have removed. Rake the ground until the surface dirt is flat.

Lay a piece of mesh fabric across the soil. The mesh fabric will allow moisture to filter through. Install the gabion structure on top of the mesh fabric. Align the wire cages or baskets next to one another. Use pieces of wire to secure the baskets or cages.

Use a shovel to add rocks, stones, or tile pieces to each wire cage or basket. Add plenty of materials, until each gabion basket or cage is filled in its entirety.
