A floor drain is a critical system used in commercial kitchens. Learn how this type of system is installed. Then choose a drain location and layout that will support operations in your new dining establishment.

The Drain System's Purpose

Liquid waste that winds up on flooring could harbor bacteria. If a sink overflows or if a liquid spills on a floor, the presence of a floor drain will route the liquid through the plumbing. A drain keeps a kitchen sanitary, plus ensures that a restaurant owner remains compliant.

If a restaurateur failed to have an operable floor drain in their commercial kitchen, a health inspector could cite them and shut their kitchen down.

The Layout Of Your Kitchen

Stainless steel, PVC, and polymer concrete are three materials that floor drains are commonly constructed of. A contractor will need to assess the layout of your kitchen first. During this step, they will determine where sinks, dishwashers, and other appliances are located.

If you do not have any appliances installed yet, you can provide the contractor with your intended kitchen layout.

The Plans For The System

The drainage system will be installed before the floor materials are installed. The contractor will need to cut through the subflooring, to install some of the floor drain materials.

All of the liquid that is routed from your kitchen will be deposited outdoors. The contractor will need to ensure that any liquid waste that is removed from the flooring will be deposited in an area with adequate drainage. They will assess the property outdoors when they draw up plans for the installation of a new floor drain system.

Your contractor will advise you on the costs and timeframes to conduct the upgrade. The charges will include the cost of plumbing materials, a drain cover, and flooring materials.

The Maintenance

A floor drain system should not be treated as a garbage disposal. All efforts should be made to avoid letting fat, grease, and oil go down the drain. These items should be stored separately and picked up by a licensed disposal service. When food or liquids spill onto the floor, the food should be manually picked up and thrown away.

A cleaning agent and a squeegee should be used to clean the flooring and route liquid waste down the drain. If the drainage system ever shows signs of liquid draining slowly, you will need to make a service appointment to have the drain materials inspected.
